WHAT IS « WALK & TALK THERAPY ?
Exercise is good for the body and the mind. Bringing a little bit of movement enriches the counselling session. Walking outdoor in nature with fresh air and exercise while sharing your struggles and life situations can be meditative. It encourages healthy activity for adults and teens. Physical activity may reduce levels of depression and anxiety and can help to prevent depressive symptoms. Anxious or grief-stricken patients are also well served by walk and talk therapy. Grief can be so totally consuming and feel so heavy, having the counterpoint of being outdoors and accomplishing something positive for one’s health can provide a sense of aliveness.
Some clients may become anxious when confronting something difficult in a traditional seated, face-to-face interaction in a regular counselling office. Walking outdoor side-by- side, in a more relax environment with visual distractions may allow for easier engagement. Sometimes it can be less intimidating and helps release inhibition.
For some people, walking outside might itself confront issues they would like to address such as a fear of open spaces or a fear of feeling judged for their appearance. Having a therapist on your side might ease a return to engaging in social situations. The focus of walk and talk therapy is not on how fast or far you can walk but on you, your process and what you are comfortable with.
The “healing power of nature.” Many clients consider the association of being outdoors with recreation and vacation, two very positive things that most people want to experience more. People sitting in an office all day and for whom the idea of sitting yet again for a counselling session can prevent from seeking counselling, walk and talk therapy might be an option they would like to consider.
Walking and talking with a counsellor is just a new way of approaching mental health goals, and it can be especially for people who have had trouble finding therapy styles that work for them in the past. It enhances the renewal of a sense of freedom. If you have felt stuck in therapy in the past, being physically active helps release some tensions and stimulates new thoughts and ideas. It is a metaphor for moving forward.
The addition of movement also allows therapists to observe breath, pace, gait, and posture and incorporate that information as part of their therapeutic process.
CONDITIONS
Fees and conditions are the same as traditional in-office sessions. The locations for the walk therapy will be determined after the first appointment at Alliance.
The client recognizes that complete confidentiality cannot be maintained in these open air venues, and accepts the possibility that other people may hear parts of the conversation. Although it is highly unlikely that others hear what walkers are saying as they pass by, the client does need to be aware of this in their decision to engage in this type of therapy.
Check with your doctor about your health before booking a “Walk and Talk Therapy”
Bring a good pair of walking shoes or sneakers, and water.
- Psychotherapy
- INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
- COUPLES THERAPY
The American Psychological Association offers this formal definition of psychotherapy:
“Psychotherapy is the informed and intentional application of clinical methods and
interpersonal stances derived from established psychological principles for the purpose of
assisting people to modify their behaviors, cognitions, emotions, and/or other personal
characteristics in directions that the participants deem desirable.”
Individual Therapy involves working on a one-to-one basis with a therapist to prepare a
plan to create positive changes in one’s life. Individual sessions focus on learning new
skills and strategies so as to decrease symptoms, improve functionality and enhance
one’s quality of life, as well as relationships with others
- PRE MARITAL THERAPY
- DIVORCE COUNSELLING
- MARATHON COUPLES THERAPY
- RELATIONSHIP COACHING FOR CONFLICT RESOLUTION
The aim of couples counseling is to help the couples identify the strengths as well as the
weaknesses of the relationship. The couple is encouraged to look at their interaction
styles and evaluate the factors that contribute to relationship problems. The therapist’s
role is to teach them various strategies and techniques to help them change/overcome
their faulty interaction styles. A collaborative approach is used to overcome hurdles and
increase overall satisfaction with the relationship.

- EXPAT RELOCATION
Family counseling is a type of psychotherapy that may have one or more objectives.
Family counseling may help to promote better relationships and understanding within a
family. It may be incident specific, as for example family counseling during a divorce,
separation, or the approaching death of a family member. Alternately family counseling
may address the needs of the family where one family member suffers from a mental or
physical illness that alters his or her behavior or habits in negative ways. Often the
experience of psychological difficulties by one member of the family affects the entire
family dynamic. As a result, family intervention is often a necessary and important aspect
of treatment.
“Family therapy is a type of psychological counseling (psychotherapy) that can help family
members improve communication and resolve conflicts.Family therapy can be useful in
any family situation that causes stress, grief, anger or conflict. It can help you and your
family members understand one another better and learn coping skills to bring you closer
together” (Mayo Clinic)

- PARENT TRAINING AND PARENTAL SKILLS TRAINING
Recognizing that every child is unique, it is important to identify early in treatment, the
child’s behavior pattern, as well as strengths and weaknesses in order to build on and
implement parenting methods that would best fit the child.
With that in mind, parent training, as a supplement to individual treatment, or as an
independent treatment goal, consists of the following:
Use scientifically tested Cognitive, Emotive and Behavioral techniques to encourage
rational behavior.
Assist parents in identifying and implementing specific skills that can support their child’s
treatment and progress in school as well as in personal life.
Assist parents in expanding the repertoire of intervention options and behavioral
management skills.
Assist parents in understanding the importance of self talk
Training parents how to differentiate between feelings and thoughts so they can
understand the relationship between their kid’s self talk and disturbed feelings.
Teaching the parents how to identify emotions and help their children distinguish
between hurtful and helpful thoughts.
- PARENT TRAINING AND PARENTAL SKILLS TRAINING
For children and adolescents, school is frequently an area in which symptoms and
impairment is manifested. Consequently, it may be necessary to consult with school
personnel to coordinate treatment efforts. This may involve communicating with the
school psychologist, administrators and where appropriate individual teachers.
Some individuals are unable to leave their homes and therefore treatment may need to be
made available in their homes. In other cases, it may be more therapeutic to provide
treatment within the home setting. Under these circumstances, home sessions may be
scheduled as needed
- GROUP THERAPY
- SUPERVISORY SERVICES FOR PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS
Group therapy, like individual therapy, is intended to help people who would like to
improve their ability to cope with difficulties and problems in their lives. But, while in
individual therapy the client meet s with only one person (the therapist), in group therapy
the meeting is with a small group of people who are looking to work on somewhat similar
emotional issues.
The aim of group therapy is to help the clients cope with emotional difficulties and to
encourage the personal development of the participants in the group. The therapist
chooses the candidates for the group who can benefit from group therapy and those who
may have a useful influence on other members in the group.
Our groups are specially designed to help with specific problems. All groups are
supportive, educational, and aimed at building coping skills. There is no requirement to
speak up. Members are encouraged to participate at their own pace, and no one is put “on
the spot”
Previous group members have found that the group therapy format helped them
feel more supported, less alone, and more likely to make progress.
