      • PARENT TRAINING AND PARENTAL SKILLS TRAINING
Recognizing that every child is unique, it is important to identify early in treatment, the
child’s behavior pattern, as well as strengths and weaknesses in order to build on and
implement parenting methods that would best fit the child.

With that in mind, parent training, as a supplement to individual treatment, or as an
independent treatment goal, consists of the following:

Use scientifically tested Cognitive, Emotive and Behavioral techniques to encourage
        rational behavior.

Assist parents in identifying and implementing specific skills that can support their child’s
treatment and progress in school as well as in personal life.

Assist parents in expanding the repertoire of intervention options and behavioral
        management skills.

Assist parents in understanding the importance of self talk
Training parents how to differentiate between feelings and thoughts so they can
understand the relationship between their kid’s self talk and disturbed feelings.
Teaching the parents how to identify emotions and help their children distinguish
        between hurtful and helpful thoughts.

For children and adolescents, school is frequently an area in which symptoms and
impairment is manifested. Consequently, it may be necessary to consult with school
personnel to coordinate treatment efforts. This may involve communicating with the
school psychologist, administrators and where appropriate individual teachers.

Some individuals are unable to leave their homes and therefore treatment may need to be
made available in their homes. In other cases, it may be more therapeutic to provide
treatment within the home setting. Under these circumstances, home sessions may be
scheduled as needed
