What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Start your journey with clarity and confidence

Beginning therapy can feel uncertain, especially if it’s your first time. At Rational Living, we aim to create a warm, non-judgmental space where you feel safe, seen, and supported. Here’s what you can expect from your first session and answers to common questions clients often ask before getting started.

Your first session is a chance for your therapist to get to know you—your concerns, goals, and any relevant background. You’ll discuss what brought you to therapy and begin shaping a plan for moving forward.
Typically, the first session lasts 50–60 minutes. You’ll have time to speak openly and ask questions about the process.
No—there’s no pressure to share anything before you’re ready. Therapy moves at your pace. You’re in control of how much you disclose and when.
Just yourself. If it helps, you can jot down a few things you’d like to talk about, but it’s not required. Some clients bring notes or questions, especially for the first session.
In most cases, the first session is more exploratory. Your therapist may share initial impressions and next steps, but therapy is a collaborative process that unfolds over time.
Absolutely. We welcome your questions—whether about the therapy process, approach, or how we’ll work together.
That’s completely normal. Many clients feel nervous before their first session. Your therapist will guide the conversation and help you feel more comfortable as you go.

Therapists can help you move toward the life you want.
